Lanham’s Beehive Spruce

The late Gary Lanham found this unusual, boldly textured, compact Norway Spruce in 1994 in Kentucky, a witch’s broom nearly 10′ up in a mature Picea abies. Intrigued by the interesting beehive form, Gary took it to Klein’s Nursery in Louisville, and from there, it made its way to Iseli Nursery. The needles of Picea abies ‘Lanham’s Beehive’ are longer and thicker than other dwarf cultivars and they have a slight glaucous tint. These features, combined with prominent, cinnamon colored stems and buds, create a dramatic effect.

Developed in Eastern Europe, this "superfruit" has outstanding levels of vitamins and antioxidants. Attractive withe white flowers in late spring give rise to large clusters of black fruit. Self Pollinating; only one variety needed for fruit production.

This majestic larger fern has long, arching fronds. The crested and forked tips of each zesty green leaflet create a unique ruffled texture. Tolerant of some sun and drought once established, this energetic fern has the potential to liven up more challenging areas in the garden.

A favourite for cut flowers and arrangements, Gypsophila (Baby's Breath) also deserves a place in the landscape.

It has airy clouds of pink tiny flowers that add both contrast and texture to the perennial border from early summer to fall.

This heart-leafed Bergenia is compact and hardy. In the summer it blooms larger and more colourful than any other Bergenia variety.  A compact and clump-forming evergreen, the  leaves go from a dark green in summer to a deep ruby-red in the fall.

Siberian Iris have masses of beautiful  flag-like flowers in late spring, which are most effective when planted in groupings. The flowers are excellent for cutting. Its sword-like leaves remain green in colour throughout the season.

Summer Phlox is very popular for its midsummer display in the sunny border. This selection produces large, fragrant flower clusters. Attractive to butterflies. Excellent cut flower. Flowering is always best in a sunny location. Easy to grow and mildew resistant although Summer Phlox always benefit from a location that provides good air circulation and consistent soil moisture. Drought tolerant. Excellent for containers or in the border. Remove faded flowers to encourage more buds to form.

Also known as Tickseed, these plants form a mound of leathery green leaves, bearing many upright stems of daisy type flowers for weeks starting in early summer.

Removing faded flowers regularly will encourage blooming to continue into the fall. Tolerant of hot, humid summer climates. Attractive to butterflies.

Wareana , also known as Siberian Cedar grows to 10' in height and makes a large wide hedge or in a corner spot. This cedar is very hardy and has minimal risk for winter burn.

This is a dense and fast spreading ground cover with silvery blue-green leaves. Medium to deep blue-violet flowers cover the plants in late April to mid-May.

Clumps may be easily divided in early spring or fall.

Grows well in rock gardens and used for edging along borders or pathways.

Wolterdingen Japanese Larch

The compact, spreading Larix kaempferi ‘Wolterdingen’ provides exceptional seasonal interest for small landscapes and rock gardens. In early spring, soft, new, blue-green needles emerge and continue to decorate the delicate mound through the growing season. In fall, needles change to rich yellow before they fall to show off ornamental, reddish brown branches with scales reminiscent of an armadillo’s armor. Discovered in a park in Wolterdingen, Germany in 1970, by G. Horstmann.

 This is one of the most floriferous Baptisia we offer, producing loads of brightly colored spikes for many weeks. After the blooming season, 'American Goldfinch' produces attractive round seed pods in the fall. Acer x pseudosieboldianum Arctic Jade^® is a member of our Jack Frost^® collection of hybrid maples and is an excellent substitute for less hardy Japanese maples in harsh climate conditions. It has large green, deeply cut leaves reminiscent of A. japonicum ‘Aconitifolium’ with an excellent branching habit. In autumn, the foliage is an impressive canvas for the dazzling fusion of orange and red tones.

A Norway maple survivor selected off the streets of Lethbridge, Alberta. Features rich, purple foliage throughout the summer. Requires well-drained, sheltered site in the prairies. Collector tree for the prairie gardener. Yellow clustered petalless flowers.

Very short needles earned Picea pungens ‘Bonny Blue’ its name and fame. The tiny, narrow needles are bright blue and they are closely arranged with an angle that is acute to the stem. Slower growing than the species when young, the tree, selected by Roger Mackiness, Corbett, Oregon, matures into a large formal stature.
