Selected for its resilience to harsh winter conditions, the sturdy, compact Picea glauca ‘North Star’ produces a densely branched, classic pyramid that is covered with medium green needles. Its moderate growth rate and ultimate, intermediate size, together with superior hardiness make this introduction from Iseli Nursery ideal for use in larger, more exposed spaces, mixed borders and beds.

This improved Beard-tongue, part of the Pristine series, forms low mounds of glossy green leaves, bearing medium-tall stalks of tubular Deep Pink flowers arranged around the strong stems. Vigorous and easy to grow. Remove faded flowers to encourage continued blooming. Attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. Stems are nice for cutting. Clumps may be easily divided in early spring. Unlike many of the taller selections, this one is ruggedly hardy in colder regions. Drought tolerant once established.

Chinese Lantern (Physalis alkekengi)  There is high value for this dried species in fall displays. In Japan, the seeds are used during the Bon Festival as offerings to guide the souls of the deceased. This plant spreads underground by rhizomes and should be contained in certain situations. Physalis is a close relative of the Cape Gooseberry but is not cultivated as a food crop. The fruit is tasteless and it should be noted that the unripe fruit and leaves are toxic if enough is ingested.

Weeping Norway Spruce

Our dark green, Picea abies ‘Pendula’ plants can be staked and trained into an outstanding upright specimen, or it can be allowed to grow as an undulating ground-cover that drapes over slopes and walls. Plant a row of several young P.a. ‘Pendula’s with stake and wire supports to train them into a living fence.

Pinus sylvestris ‘Hillside Creeper’ is a classy creeper that spreads out and forms a flat mesa of layered branches that are covered with thick, green needles. The vigorous, hardy pine, lighter green in winter, makes an excellent ground-covering option for banks or walls or tucked in and around boulders. Found as a seedling by Layne Ziegenfus of Hillside Gardens, Lehighton, Pennsylvania.

For longer needles, a more natural, open look and a consistent habit, the versatile Pinus mugo ‘Palouse’ is perfect for a casual landscape where a larger Mugo Pine is warranted. The robust green selection grows into a bushy, rounded mound, or with annual candle pruning, it can be kept smaller and more refined. A reliable and hardy addition to the sunny mixed border, it also works well as a divider or to fill a corner.

Garden Astilbe are a popular choice for shady gardens, where they perform well if given a rich, moist soil and regular watering. This selection has long, feathery plumes of deep lavender-mauve flowers, over a mound of elegant, lacy green leaves. Also thrives in tubs, or mixed containers. Excellent for cutting.

Fertilize in April and June.  Seed heads may be removed, or left on the plant for winter interest.
