West Coast Seeds

Dalmation Peach is a first year flowering foxglove with uniform, creamy peach-pink blooms and pale freckled throats. Flower bells form on one side of the stem, sitting close together on sturdy stems. Grow these vigorous plants in the garden or in pots as a hardy annual.

Echinacea hybrida 'Cheyenne Spirit.' Sow Cheyenne Spirit Echinacea Seeds in rows or clumps outdoors in early May for fall blooms. Sow indoors March 15th for August blooms. Plants bloom sixteen weeks after seeding. Germinate at 21°C (70°F), under bright lights. Cheyenne Spirit is a good, long lasting  cut flower. Cheyenne Spirit Echinacea blooms range from yellow to pink to crimson. All Echinacea plants are drought tolerant, but this variety is so dear, you'll want to baby them in the garden. This premium hybrid Echinacea blend is an All America Selections winner, and is sold by seed count.

Perennial

Dianthus plumarius. Sweetness Dianthus seeds are the Fleuroselect award winning variety and much loved for their ability to produce flowers in the first year of growth. The variable, frilled, pink to white flowers appear from July to October atop stems that grow only 15cm (6") tall. Try it in containers or raised beds. Dianthus is quite drought tolerant, so it is a good option for xeriscaping. This variety of Dianthus is easy to grow from seeds. Mulch in winter if really cold weather is expected, or simply grow it as an annual with new seeds each spring. Hardy to Zone 3.

Perennial

Centaurea cyanus. The tall silvery stems of this cornflower provides a stunning contrast to the deep plum coloured blooms. Cornflowers are wonderfully adaptable to a variety of soils, and are heat and drought tolerant. Suitable for beds, borders, as well as meadows. They attract a host of pollinators but are ignored by deer. They make excellent cut and dried flowers. The petals are also edible—try them in salads or sprinkled on desserts.

Annual.

Aquilegia x hybrida. All America Selections Winner. Tall, graceful and intricate, long spurred blossoms are perfect for cutting. Nodding and dainty, the huge 8cm (3") wide blooms are held high above delicate foliage. This mix is marvelous in woodland plantings or any shady location. McKana's Giant Mix Columbine seeds bloom mid-spring to early summer. White, cream, yellow, and red. Deadhead the seed pods before they open to control self-sowing. Or better yet, watch for them to open on the plants after they begin to dry out, and collect the seeds from the ornamental seed pods for planting around the garden or sharing with friends. Plant height 75cm (30").

Perennial

Callistephus chinensis. The Blues Mix is an excellent choice for the cut flower garden. It blooms from July to October on strong, upright, multi branching stems to a height of 75cm (30"). The mix of large and small flowers appear in blues, purples, and white, but all with the ruff of fully double petals. All are attractive to pollinating insects and hummingbirds, and they look magnificent in a large bouquet. Be sure to take frequent harvests of cut flowers, or at least keep the plants dead-headed to prolong and enhance the bloom time. Please follow the planting and spacing instructions closely.

Annual

Love-Lies-Bleeding looks as pretty in the garden as it does in cut and dried bouquets. Long, vibrant burgundy tassels hang from tall, lush green plants. Its easy to grow these vigorous 90-150cm (36-60”) plants. Pair with Hot Biscuits and Green Tails for maximum impact.

Sweet Bliss is a blend of white, pink and purple alyssum flowers, and will spread into a charming multi-hued carpet of tiny, fragrant blossoms. These excellent edging/border plants grow no more than 10cm (2-4") tall. Alyssum is a great pollinator plant and it makes a fantastic companion for any flowering/fruiting vegetable. Drought tolerant and suitable for containers or hanging baskets.

T. serpyllum. Creeping thyme is an ornamental. From a tiny clump of little seedlings comes a spreading mat of scented foliage covered with pink flowers. Plant Creeping Thyme seeds for excellent coverage and easy use in rock gardens. This is a mat forming herb that grows to maximum heights of 15cm (6") and blooms May to August. Grow in full sun, in well drained soil, with moderate to low water. Use in rock or herb gardens, as an edging along paths or as a ground cover. Plant in Zones 4-9. Creeping Thyme is a slow growing plant with dust-like, tiny seeds. To fill in a larger area more quickly, try sowing the seeds sparsely into a 128-cell Plug Insert, and create as many seedlings as possible for later transplanting. The seedlings may have to grow in the flat for the first season, but you will end up with better, more even coverage.

Lavandula stoechas. Sow French lavender seeds indoors, 6-8 weeks before last frost, or direct sow the seeds in early spring when a chance of frost is still possible. Uniform and distinctive, 'Sancho Panza' blooms from June to September on shrubby bushes that grow 35cm (14") tall. This variety of French lavender has a fantastic fragrance and dries particularly well. Great in containers, but in mass plantings the scent and colour are amazing. French lavender is also a very hardy perennial and drought tolerant, so good for use in xeriscaping. Cut back the whole plant by a third after flowering is finished to produce new growth.

Fresca strawberry seeds are so tiny it's hard to believe that these miniature seeds produce big, mouthwatering traditional strawberries. Start the seeds indoors during the winter and place the seedlings out after the last frost. While they may not produce much fruit the first year, these sprawling plants will eventually yield heavily over a long season. They are considered everbearing, and will flower over and over if plants are kept picked. This strawberry is ideal for containers, raised beds, or hanging baskets. For fruits the first year, give them a really early start in December or January. Follow the growing instructions below, and then grow the seedlings on under bright artificial lights.

Clusters of sumptuous, meaty cherry-sized fruits appear in one main set on tall plants that benefit from support. This Tuscan heirloom is one of the finest for sun-dried tomatoes, but the fruits also can particularly well. Try growing some in three-to-five-gallon pots on the balcony, or up against the south facing wall of a house to maximize heat from the sun. This will produce more fruits with better consistent fruit set. The semi-determinate vines benefit from support.

Manitoba Tomato seeds produce vigorous determinate plants that thrive in cool climates with short seasons. An early producer with excellent yields, Originally developed in the mid 1950's by the Morden Experimental Farm in Morden, MB to ripen during the short summer season. An excellent choice on the West Coast.

A prairie favourite, Manitoba tomato plants bear medium-large fruits 170 grams (6 oz). The bright red fruits have smooth skin and firm, meaty flesh with a refreshing, tangy tomato taste. Well suited for slicing and preserving.

Matures in 60 days (Open-pollinated seeds)

Choose Early Girl tomato seeds for a fast and early crop of delicious medium-sized red tomatoes. This is an early maturing variety for coastal grower. The plants keep bearing fruit heavily throughout the summer on manageable, disease resistant vines, producing baskets of tasty, 110-170g 4-6 oz) tomatoes. Early Girl is resistant to Fusarium wilt races 1 and 2. Some coastal growers choose early maturing tomatoes as a way to beat Late Blight. The disease usually strikes mid- to late summer, and by that time Early Girl has already produced the bulk of her fruit.

Indeterminate (vine). Matures in 57 days. (hybrid seeds)

CERTIFIED ORGANIC. Glacier Organic are among the earliest maturing of early season tomatoes. The productive little plants are compact and well suited to containers and balcony growing. Glacier's 'saladette' fruits are small at just 5cm (2") in diameter, but they are very sweet, with a superior flavour to some other early maturing varieties. The stout plants grow to only 60-75cm (24-30") tall, and bear most of their fruit in a concentrated set. The plants are relatively cold tolerant and perform well in short season northern gardens.
