Picea glauca ‘Big Berta’ is not your typical Dwarf Alberta Spruce, this cultivar is a “big ‘berta”. It has the same ‘Conica’ type juvenile foliage but the needles are much longer and growth rate is much faster, resulting in a more open form. A hybrid of Picea glauca ‘North Star’ and P. pungens ‘Montgomery, it’s a hardy choice for northern landscapes.

Selected for its resilience to harsh winter conditions, the sturdy, compact Picea glauca ‘North Star’ produces a densely branched, classic pyramid that is covered with medium green needles. Acer x pseudosieboldianum Ice Dragon^® is a welcome addition to the Jack Frost^® collection of hardy garden maples from Iseli Nursery. This all-season tree has a cascading habit and was bred and selected to tolerate Zone 4 winters while still retaining the refined qualities of the less hardy Japanese maples. Spring begins as leaves unfurl blushed orange-red, quickly maturing to green. In summer, the finely divided, delicate appearing green leaves are durable and tolerant of sun and heat. Autumn brings foliage of a kaleidoscope of yellow, orange and red. After leaf drop, the sinuous and undulating branching structure is a visual treat during the long cold winter months.

Rich, deep green summer color combines with the compact textural foliage and naturally sculpted spire-like shape making this new selection an unexpected breakthrough for the hardy common Arborvitae. With a bronzed winter color, a very young tree has proportions perfect for miniscapes or container gardening. As it ages, an elegant small tree develops. The natural character as a specimen is the finest quality a conifer can offer the landscape in either cold or moderate climates.

Alpenglow® is a red-leafed, upright hybrid maple that is hardy down to –30F. In spring, merlot leaves dance on arching branches; translucent veins help them catch the light and glow. The deep red mellows to a burnished bronze in summer and finally turns to blazing orange and red in fall. A refined oval habit and sturdy branching make Alpenglow® a majestic centerpiece that you can rely on for a colorful show year after year. Our hybrid maples have proven to be resilient trees that can handle whatever challenges nature throws at them.

Picea pungens ‘Montgomery’ is an outstanding and industry standard silver-blue spruce that was originally part of the conifers accumulated by dedicated collector, Col. R.H. Montgomery. Prior to selling his Greenwich, Connecticut, estate, he donated his entire collection to the New York Botanical Garden, and this Picea pungens was named to honor him during the dedication of the Montgomery Conifer Collection in May, 1949. The original plant can still be seen there today. The slow-growing, dwarf spruce is globe-shaped when young, but it will eventually form a leader as it matures and develop an upright, broad shape that is wider than tall.

Lanham’s Beehive Spruce

The late Gary Lanham found this unusual, boldly textured, compact Norway Spruce in 1994 in Kentucky, a witch’s broom nearly 10′ up in a mature Picea abies. Intrigued by the interesting beehive form, Gary took it to Klein’s Nursery in Louisville, and from there, it made its way to Iseli Nursery. The needles of Picea abies ‘Lanham’s Beehive’ are longer and thicker than other dwarf cultivars and they have a slight glaucous tint. These features, combined with prominent, cinnamon colored stems and buds, create a dramatic effect.

Pinus mugo ‘Mops’ is an excellent dwarf selection that grows into a low, dense dome remaining compact without shearing. The mounding plant has a smooth appearance that comes from many evenly spaced needles growing at a uniform rate on abundant branchlets. During most of the year, ‘Mops’ displays a hint of gray/blue in its green, but during the crisp, cold months of winter, needles take on a warm, golden hue. It’s no wonder this choice is one of our most popular for confined spaces.

The hardy Threadleaf Arborvitae grows slowly with long, thick, bright green to yellow thread-like foliage, filling out its narrow silhouette with tons of interest. Dryopteris affinis ‘Cristata-The King’

Acer x pseudosieboldianum Arctic Jade^® is a member of our Jack Frost^® collection of hybrid maples and is an excellent substitute for less hardy Japanese maples in harsh climate conditions. It has large green, deeply cut leaves reminiscent of A. japonicum ‘Aconitifolium’ with an excellent branching habit. In autumn, the foliage is an impressive canvas for the dazzling fusion of orange and red tones.

Very short needles earned Picea pungens ‘Bonny Blue’ its name and fame. The tiny, narrow needles are bright blue and they are closely arranged with an angle that is acute to the stem. Slower growing than the species when young, the tree, selected by Roger Mackiness, Corbett, Oregon, matures into a large formal stature.

Wolterdingen Japanese Larch

The compact, spreading Larix kaempferi ‘Wolterdingen’ provides exceptional seasonal interest for small landscapes and rock gardens. In early spring, soft, new, blue-green needles emerge and continue to decorate the delicate mound through the growing season. In fall, needles change to rich yellow before they fall to show off ornamental, reddish brown branches with scales reminiscent of an armadillo’s armor. Discovered in a park in Wolterdingen, Germany in 1970, by G. Horstmann.

‘Roundabout’ is a compact, green garden orb. Perhaps its color is better described as viridian, a sort of bluish green. Whatever color you perceive, it is a super hardy, symmetrical addition to the garden, like a spherical topiary that never needs shearing. Slow growing with needles in perfect scale to its small size, ‘Roundabout’ is a winner for today’s smaller landscapes. Loves full sun and well drained soil. ‘Roundabout’ was discovered at Iseli Nursery as a witch’s broom growing on Picea pungens ‘Green Spire’.

The outrageously large flower clusters on this profuse bloomer have individual florets with recurved petals that resemble hyacinth flowers. Long-lasting flowers held aloft on sturdy stems open white in summer and age to pale pink in fall. Easygoing and adaptable, Skyfall will be happy in sun or part shade and isn’t picky about soil type. Prune in late winter to shape.

Hydrangea paniculata Skyfall (‘GRHYPAST05’ PP32,971)

Thuja occidentalis ‘Zmatlik’ is medium green throughout spring and summer, but in winter, as temperatures fall, it puts on its winter coat of intense plum-bronze. The winter color is very dramatic and adds to the already interesting texture of this hardy narrow column. Small, scale-like sprays of foliage twist and curl creating a densely foliaged plant than can be enjoyed as a single specimen or planted as a screen. Found as a seedling by Mr. Zmatlik in the Czech Republic in 1984.

Pinus sylvestris ‘Hillside Creeper’ is a classy creeper that spreads out and forms a flat mesa of layered branches that are covered with thick, green needles. The vigorous, hardy pine, lighter green in winter, makes an excellent ground-covering option for banks or walls or tucked in and around boulders. Found as a seedling by Layne Ziegenfus of Hillside Gardens, Lehighton, Pennsylvania.

For longer needles, a more natural, open look and a consistent habit, the versatile Pinus mugo ‘Palouse’ is perfect for a casual landscape where a larger Mugo Pine is warranted. The robust green selection grows into a bushy, rounded mound, or with annual candle pruning, it can be kept smaller and more refined. A reliable and hardy addition to the sunny mixed border, it also works well as a divider or to fill a corner.

Delicate, green needles and short, slender branches give Larix decidua ‘Prag’ a soft, airy texture. Newer branches sweep gently upward and then spill down as they mature, giving ‘Prag’ a low, mounding form. Super cold hardy, this deciduous conifer is a great choice in some challenging garden conditions.

Larix decidua ‘Puli’ is an elegant alternative to the common L.d. ‘Pendula’. When staked, its slender branches create a narrow silhouette that is more dense and lighter green than ‘Pendula’. If unstaked, ‘Puli’ branches spread out slowly along the ground and make an effective ground-cover. Very attractive in gardens with an Asian aesthetic.

Exquisite, cinnamon red, peeling bark is shown off to good effect on this new, large cultivar from the Trompenburg Arboretum, Rotterdam, Netherlands. The spicy colored bark, exposed through the tree’s open, elegant branch structure, makes a knockout color contrast with its cool, silvery blue needles.
