Prunus tenella

Russian Almond is a multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with an upright spreading habit of growth. Its average texture blends into the landscape, but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition.

This is a high maintenance shrub that will require regular care and upkeep, and should only be pruned after flowering to avoid removing any of the current season's flowers.

Spirea is an old landscape staple, so what could one do that could possible earn it superlatives? Well, seedless and non-invasive would be a start; non-stop blooming would be even better. And these are exactly what makes Double Play Doozie spirea the most beautiful, innovative, ground-breaking spirea bush to ever grace a landscape. Like all of the Double Play^® spirea series, the show begins in early spring, when the foliage emerges in blazing brilliant color - in this case, deep red. By late spring, the flowers begin to emerge, a bright, glowing purple-red that truly sings in the landscape. And as summer comes on, the show doesn't stop: it just keeps flowering, and flowering, and flowering. Because it produces no seeds, it puts all of its energy into flowering! It does it all with the same good looks, drought tolerance, and deer resistance that you expect from a spirea plant, too.

Standing Ovation^™ welcomes spring with loads of white flowers that often age to edible berries in June. As the season continues, its dark green leaves put on a show, changing to shades of red and orange in autumn. This upright, oval shrub offers year-round interest, adding height to the garden and nice structure during winter. The uniform habit makes Standing Ovation^™ a great shrub for hedging and privacy plantings.

Bold, bright, and beautiful: that's Winecraft Gold^™ smokebush. Round, waxy leaves emerge a sunny orange, soon take on a golden hue, then mature to a cheerful chartreuse for the season. In early summer, cloud-like green flower clusters cover the plant, and these turn into the pink "smoke" plumes that earn the plant its name. Naturally grows with a dense, oval shape that's ideal for adding a spot of bright color to partially shaded or sunny areas.

Be the first on your block with colorful blooms in spring with Black Hat^® rhododendron. This very early blooming rhododendron is a confection of ruffled lavender flowers in the first few weeks of spring, each a rounded cluster atop a spray of leathery evergreen foliage. It's the foliage that gives this plant its name, in fact - its a very dark purple-green, reaching near black tones, especially in cooler weather. This gives in undeniably drama and chic and really sets it apart from other early blooming rhodies. Thick, durable blooms ensure longer lasting blooms over a longer period, too.

An exciting improvement to Ninebark, Summer Wine combines the fine texture and compact branching of Physocarpus 'Nana' with the dark foliage of Physocarpus Diabolo. Summer Wine is an easy way to introduce wine-colored foliage into the home garden. It is fast-growing and has few, if any, pest problems. Its graceful, arching habit makes it very appealing in the landscape. It adds beautiful color and vibrancy to your garden, especially in spring. In early June it blooms with white button-like flowers that accent the leaves nicely. Pruning and other maintenance is rarely needed. Use it as a bold accent or part of a mixed border. Summer Wine may even be cut for use in arrangements. This is a trouble-free addition to either the home or commercial landscape.

Stately color in two extremes. The first is a refreshing bright green and cream, with hints of pale pink on the margins. The second is in fall when the whole plant erupts into a fabulous burgundy and hot pink duo. Even the stems are burgundy! If you’ve ever seen a tri-color beech, Sgt. Pepper^™ dogwood is a lot like that, but in a much easier to use form. With its large size, it makes a great anchor for the garden. You can position it at the back of the garden to work as a foundation plant, breaking up the straight lines of a building with its rounded form. It would also make an incredible hedge or specimen plant.

Mockorange is a delightfully old-fashioned plant that has unfortunately fallen out of favor, mostly due to its enormous size. Illuminati Tower^® mockorange stands to breathe new life into this classic favorite, though, combining a landscape-friendly size with a totally unique space-saving habit. It naturally grows in a very narrow, upright way, each sturdy stem a stack of rugged, deep green leaves that looks like a four-sided tower. In late spring/early summer, hundreds of fragrant white flowers emerge from between the leaves for striking show that truly celebrates the season.

Little Spark^® is a compact spirea with orange new growth that holds its yellow leaf color throughout the summer, even when planted in full sun. A summer bloomer, the pink flowers arise just above the foliage, and if you give them a quick shear when they are done, it will rebloom in late summer. Fall color includes shades of pink, creating a multi-toned effect. Little Spark^® is fantastic when planted along a garden border.

Selected for its stunning foliage, Fireside^® Ninebark displays reddish new growth that matures to deep red-purple. Its foliage holds its color reliably all summer, including in warmer climates. Add to that, Fireside^™ doesn’t show signs of powdery mildew in the landscape and you’ve got a real winner. Pinkish-white flowers bloom in spring, and foliage turns deep purple in fall. The plant habit is tidier than many other ninebark with a rounded, upright shape.
