Raphanus sativus. Daikon radishes are large and require deeply prepared soil, as they can grow to over 30cm (12") long. One of the best daikon radishes for summer, Minowase Summer Cross have white roots that are 15-20 inches long and 2.5" in diameter. The pure white flesh is excellent for salads, sandwiches, cooking, and pickling. Flavour is milder when grown to maturity in fall, in light soil, and with good irrigation. 

Sow and grow as you would turnips, thinning them to 15-20cm (6-8") apart. At each cultivation, push the soil over the top of the root.

It forms narrow, graceful clumps of green foliage with striking silver-white plumes that transform into deep red-bronze in the fall. Ideal for placement at the back of borders, as a hedge, or screen.

'Primo' melons are typically grown in the cool season. The interior melon produces thick, dark orange flesh and medium cavity. The exterior of the melon produces heavy netting and slight indentation. Delivers size and sugar content even under cool conditions.

Lotus Moon^™ Pearlbush is a profuse spring bloomer that is covered in white round flower buds resembling a string of pearls. The buds open to clear white blooms that completely cover the plant in April and May, attracting early butterflies. Flowers are borne on previous year’s growth so prune right after flowering. Sometimes called Elephant Ears, this is a bold specimen perennial that needs a moist location. Plants form a clump of large, jagged-edged green leaves. Purplish black stems rise above in summer, bearing long spikes of bright-yellow daisy flowers. Superb for the back of the border, or at the waterside. An unusual centerpiece for a tub or large container. Both the flowers and leaves are great for cutting.

Sometimes listed as Fingerling or Long Purple Italian, Long Purple Eggplant seeds produce stocky, productive plants that bear four or more fruits per plant. The fruits are dark purple and club shaped 20-25cm (8-10") long and around 6cm (2.5") in diameter. The flesh is firm and mild in flavour, and it's lovely when cooked, taking on the flavours it is cooked with. This old heirloom variety arrived in American gardens back in the 1850s. Try growing this eggplant in a three to five gallon pot on your patio. Eggplants thrive in hot weather, and this variety does particularly well in northern areas.

This iris, recently found at a breeder's nursery in the Netherlands, is truly unique and presents a color combination that is unexpected when Siberian iris bloom. With its vigorous, upright growth it makes a wonderful climber in a short time. The strikingly beautiful flowers are mid pink at the centre, gradually becoming lighter towards the edges. The numerous, neatly placed petals in each bloom create a slightly domed shape. Named after the Irish flautist.

David Austin Roses were not developed for Zone 3. BUT it is possible to have success here in Manitoba by following a few key tips. 

Choose a location that is not in line with strong north winds

Plant the crown (this is where the roots end and the woody shrub begins) of your rose 6”-12” below the surface of the soil. As your shrub will be in full leaf at time of purchase you can clean off leaves that will get buried if you like.

In the fall you will need to cover with a deep layer of mulch. Wood mulch, straw, leaves or a combination of all. Use a burlap tarp (Not Plastic) to cover and hold down with rocks or stakes. This will ensure the mulch is not blown away. A full wheelbarrow or more per rose is not out of the question. Throughout the winter direct your snow clearing efforts to cover your roses as well. The more insulation the better.

Don’t remove the tarp and mulch until night temperatures are consistently hovering about zero to +3 with no threat of deep freeze, as we sometimes see in April.

Gorgeous jalapeno-shaped peppers mature from bright green to nearly jet black, and finally to intense scarlet red. The productive 60cm (24") tall plants are loaded with fruits of medium heat. Use these interchangeably with jalapeno peppers for a a dash of drama in dips and salsas. The flavour really brightens as they mature, and the colour stands out on market tables. Try Black Hungarian pepper seeds in patio containers but aim to keep the soil constantly moist during the growing season and allow for good air circulation around plants. Mildly spicy 1,000-2,5000 SHUs.

Large vase-shaped leaves form a beautiful mound of variegated foliage. Flower stems can reach between 5-6ft (150-180cm) and produce pale lavender blooms. 

For best growth results plant in moist well-drained soil and cut stems back after blooming to encourage regrowth.

Officially the hottest pepper in the world as ranked by Guinness Records, with average Scoville units of 1.5 million units. Fiery red fruit has a unique little stinger tail. Flavour is surprisingly good once you get past the heat.

Harvest leaves regularly for fresh and flavorful tarragon all season long. Excellent spiller in mixed herb containers. Leaves have a distinctive anise flavor and scent. Use fresh or dried to flavor fish, meats, vegetables, eggs, salads and sauces.

Creeping Charlie is an attractive, variegated vines. It’s an excellent component in mixed containers but also works well as a ground cover.

A monstrous back ground plant, this plant has a spectacular flower with large, cream coloured plumes the size of your head! Elegant lacy leaves form a very dense and bushy clump. This plant demands space, and is somewhat inclined to sulk in hot summer areas, so plant in a moist, peaty soil, or even at the waterside. Cut plants back in summer if they look untidy.

An excellent companion to summer-blooming shrub roses. Good for cutting, the flowers may also be dried by hanging upside down in a warm, dark room.

Lavandula stoechas. Sow French lavender seeds indoors, 6-8 weeks before last frost, or direct sow the seeds in early spring when a chance of frost is still possible. Uniform and distinctive, 'Sancho Panza' blooms from June to September on shrubby bushes that grow 35cm (14") tall. This variety of French lavender has a fantastic fragrance and dries particularly well. Great in containers, but in mass plantings the scent and colour are amazing. French lavender is also a very hardy perennial and drought tolerant, so good for use in xeriscaping. Cut back the whole plant by a third after flowering is finished to produce new growth.

High in phosphorus for strong and rapid root growth. Dissolves easily in water.

Just like the remarkable hour of twilight when fireflies light up the sky, intensely yellow flowers glow bright against the dark red foliage. As the season fades, dark red foliage becomes more intense. It's also easy to grow, so you'll have more time to relax and enjoy the view.

Russian Cypress is a low-spreading evergreen with flat arching branches. It has very graceful foliage resembling arborvitae with a light-green colour. Although, the winter colour in the sun is brownish-purple. Found in the wild in Siberia. This plant must have a well-drained site.

CERTIFIED ORGANIC! Black Krim Organic tomato seeds are extremely popular on the West Coast and beyond.
